I'm in BMX PLUS!

Just found out that I am in the August issue of BMX PLUS! magazine. This is extra cool because when I was younger I used to run to the store to buy the new issue every month. It will be a long time before this smile goes away. I would like to take time out to thank Solution BMX Skate shop for all of thier continued support. You guys are the best, and I am looking forward to representing @ Voodoo Jam in new Orleans on August first. L8r, Joe

New Guy on the scene.

I am going to my friend Scott Rapers house to help him get a flatland bike ready for him to ride. I'm way stoked to have someone to ride with. Photos of both Scott and My progress will find their way on here soon. L8r, Joe

Things are coming to a head.

I have recently been working on moving to my newly purchased camper and my family has even suggested that I'm "on drugs". I guess 'cause they can't see what in the world anyone would do this for. Well, I'll tell you. I am going to use the money I can save to travel the world and ride my bike as much as possible. There it is, plain and simple. l8r, Joe

JoMopro continued

Ok, sorry for the delay. As I was saying, after the amatuer classes were done the entire Indy crew got going down the long hill in the parking lot. Scott Byrd was doing crackpackers clear into the sunset. I did manage a few variations for quite a way as did Chris Armstrong. The clear winners of this improvisional contest were Scott and Cooper who did a backpacker as long as Scott's crackpacker. Much fun was had as many of the other contestants joined in on the fun. Back to the hotel where Jake could be found eating much junkfood from his travellers meal bag. Chris and I could not resist the opportunity to haze Scott a bit, so we forced him to make us both Big Mac style peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before he was allowed to eat. I had ice on my knee for the next few hours so I'd be able to ride on saturday. Lights out.

Saturday morning I again awoke to find Jake under the desk ( he must have a really big desk @ home) and Marty @ home on the floor. Brant had to deal with Scott laying sideways across the bed they were sharing and again many tales of snoring would follow. A couple cups of coffee and we were off to the comp. practice was rad and I finally pulled my original trick for Mark Dandridges camera, needless to say, I was stoked. Cooper kicked major ass and wound up getting third place and a samarai sword for his efforts. After the comp ended many long goodbyes were said and we were headed home. Jake took the wheel for the majority of the trip, thanks Jake. Cooper again was soiling his drawers everytime the roads got wet or there was a truck near us.

Let me say again that the people and the facility @ JoMoPro are the finest I've ever seen. I cannot wait for next year. L8r, Joe

JoMoPro RULES!!

Ok, we, Chris Armstrong, Jake Jackson, Brandt Hughes,Scott Byrd, Andy Cooper and Myself drove all the way to Joplin Mo in a 15 passenger van that Jake had rented. All I can say about the trip is, Cooper is terribly afraid of rain and large trucks. Nuff said. We got there thursday night, checked out the contest area and settled in @ the hotel. The next morning I awoke to find Jake sleeping under the desk and Marty Clark in the middle of the floor. Many tales of snoring would soon follow. After we all cleaned up we headed to the Waffle House for some grub. It was here I saw Art Thomason for the first time in years, great guy, glad he's doing well.
When we got to the contest area we all started warming up. Let me say that the floor was the best contest suface I've ever seen. I soon was introduced to Chad Johnston and he is one of the coolest and genuine people I've ever met. He said he was putting me and my trick on the alltime trick list he's working on. Needless to say I'm way stoked. The comp started with Jake Jackson pulling all of his tricks and making the Indy crew look good from the get go. Scott Byrd had some trouble pulling his run together, but was KILLING it all weekend long. He even learned stick-b's in roughly 30 minutes on sunday.Brandt hughes qualified 2nd in expert and wound up 5th, Chris Armstrong had some probs with his signature cliff hanger, but did manage a double boomerang to brakeless decade link that rocked the house. This is all I have time to write @ the moment, I'll post the rest of the trip tomorrow. Stay tuned. L8r, Joe

The Last Saturday Jam

Recently my friend Jake Jackson of midwest flatland had an idea to have all the flatlanders in and around all of the major cities in north america meet up and ride on the last saturday of every month. I think that this is a great idea as it will afford riders who may not have met any other riders in their area an opportunity to meet and ride with other riders in thier area. The first of these jams took place last saturday 3-28-2009. Alot of fun was had. here are some photos and the like. L8r, Joe

Getting Pumped Up

I am going to the JoMoPro contest in Joplin Mo next month, and I cannot wait. It seems that the promoters of the event are making an attempt @ bringing Flatland back to the American contest scene. It is going to be cool to see flatlanders back together with the ramp guys. As an older rider I used to ride it all, until I blew out my ACL and had to have surgery. So, having said that, I'm excited to see some of my friends from the world of ramp riding and I'm sure fun will be had by all. Secondly, this will be my first roadtrip with the entire Indy Crew, and I am looking forward to stories I can tell for a lifetime. If you are going, I'll see you there. L8r, Joe

Fun Times indeed .

I recently got to Judge the Pro comp @ the fight with flight contest in Indianapolis. This photo was taken @ the comp. I am going to take this opportunity to thank Jake Jackson and James Newton for making this an event to remember. I have zero idea how these two guys pulled it off in such a short time, but It ROCKED. To all of the younger flatlanders out there enjoy these times, there are no promises as to how many times something this cool will happen this close to home. Keep Pushin'. L8r, Joe

Too much fun.

I recently attended the Red Bull Fight with Flight contest in Indianapolis. I entered the amatuer class and bombed big time. However, I rode well the entire wekend other than my 2 minute run. As I thought about it, I have decided to ride in the pro class from now on. The reason I made this decision is this, either you pull your stuff or you don't. I am not making this decision because I think that I am better than anyone. It's because I've ridden pro @ several comps years ago and I feel the amatuer class is for the youth, our future.I may not compete again until later this year, but when I do, the pro class is where I'll be. Some will talk smack, but my real friends will be supportive. L8r, Joe

Good energy begets good energy.

I am writing this because My good friend and talented flatland rider Daniel Burnett left me a message on myspace thanking me as well as other Indy locals for having encouraged and supported him. The thing about this message that sticks in my mind is Daniel said that he wanted to do well, and show us he has what it takes. Well Dan, not only do you have what it takes, but you always have. Guys like Chris, Andy, Alan, and myself do not hang with you and Scott because you can do certain tricks on your bike. We hang with you guys because you are our friends and always will be, wherever life takes you. So Dan, congrats on doing such a GREAT job @ the contest. As for Me, I was proud to call you a friend well before any of this. Keep on riding little bro. See you soon. L8r, Joe

Dedication or compulsion?

Yesterday I got off work having already made arrangements to ride @ my super secret indoor spot. When I got off the snow had already started to come down in large quantities. As I arrived @ my house I began to ask myself if it was really a good idea to drive on the roads like they were. I decided that I really had to go ride, because I'd been planning on it all day. If I did not go I would not have been able to stand myself. So I went, and I rode my ass off. I had one of the single best sessions I've had all winter so far. As I arrived home I began to wonder if I really would have the chance to prepare for this upcoming contest. And then all @ once my compulsive side says " I'll see to it!" Always remember to believe in yourself. It'll take you a long way. L8r, Joe

Mom wasn't that far off.

As I sat last night with ice on my knee I remembered a conversation that I had with my Mom some years ago. Basically Mom was trying to tell me to take care of myself or I may have lingering orthopedic health concerns. While I realize She was just looking out for me I have to say that @ the time I thought she was crazy. Me, not be the picture of health we all know ? I know, I should have listened a little better, but I was young and for the most part indestructable. One comment Mom made that day was this. Joe, if you aren't careful you won't be able to walk when you're 40. As my knee is becoming numb from the ice I realize @ 38 years old, she wasn't that far gone. So Mom, when you read this know that I'm paying a bit more attention to my health nowadays, and thanks for the concern. L8r, Joe

Coming of age.

I will start this by saying that I like contests. Not for the competition but because I get to see all of my friends from all over. I started going to contests in 1986 when my Dad realized that I wasn't just playing on my bike and agreed to take me to an AFA comp in Columbus Ohio. I still have alot of respect for Dad simply because he took an interest in what I was doing and put some energy into my dream.
Since then I've been to many comps some I did well at, and others I did not. The one thing all of these experiences have in common is fun. I had the best time at all of them. Not because I rode well, but because I got to ride with people of similar interests, my friends.
I am looking forward to the comp @ the end of the month. It'll be great to see old friends and make new ones as well. L8r, Joe
